Summer on the Rivers

Summer can be one of the busiest periods of the year on Britain’s rivers. Longer daylight hours, generally better weather and increased activity around the water mean that construction, maintenance, surveying and environmental projects can often make good progress.

But for those of us working on the water, summer brings its own particular set of challenges.

At Sentry Boats, our crews spend much of the year supporting projects on rivers, canals, reservoirs, estuaries and coastal waters throughout the UK. During the summer months, one of the biggest differences is simple: there are usually far more people sharing the water with us.

Busier Rivers Mean Greater Awareness

A river that can be relatively quiet during the colder months can become a very different working environment once summer arrives.

Pleasure boats, rowing clubs, kayaks, paddleboards, anglers and other recreational users can all be added to the normal commercial traffic. In some locations there may also be organised events, sightseeing vessels or people simply enjoying the riverbanks and waterside areas.

For a safety boat crew supporting contractors working on, over or alongside the water, that increased activity has to become part of the operational picture.

Maintaining a clear working area, monitoring approaching vessels and communicating with other river users can become increasingly important, particularly where contractors are working from scaffolding, pontoons, temporary platforms or structures above the water.

Our role isn’t simply to have a boat sitting alongside a project. A professional safety boat crew needs to remain alert to everything happening around the work area and recognise when circumstances are beginning to change.

More Leisure Users – and More Unpredictability
Experienced commercial river users generally understand navigation channels, exclusion areas and the limitations of vessels carrying out specialist operations.
Recreational river users can sometimes be less predictable.

A paddleboard or kayak can approach a working area surprisingly quietly, while small pleasure craft may not initially appreciate why a particular section of water needs to remain clear.

This means good observation and early communication are essential.

Where necessary, safety and guard boats can help monitor an operational area, warn approaching vessels and help maintain an appropriate safety or exclusion zone around the work taking place.

The objective is always prevention. Spotting a potential problem early is considerably better than having to respond once it has developed into an incident.

Summer Weather Isn’t Always Straightforward
Warm sunshine certainly makes life on the river more pleasant, but it doesn’t necessarily make it easier.

Long periods exposed to strong sunlight can create glare across the water, reducing visibility and making it harder to identify objects, people or smaller craft at distance.

Higher temperatures can also make long days on the water physically demanding for crews. Hydration, sun protection and maintaining concentration throughout the working day all become important considerations. And, as anyone familiar with the British summer knows, conditions can change remarkably quickly.

A calm, bright morning can be followed by heavy rain, strong winds or thunderstorms later in the day. River conditions can subsequently change as rainfall further upstream begins to affect water levels and flow.

Professional boat operations therefore require continual awareness rather than simply relying on the conditions that existed when the vessel was launched that morning.

Changing River Conditions
Water levels themselves can create additional summer considerations. Extended periods of dry weather can result in lower river levels in some locations, potentially exposing previously submerged obstacles or restricting where particular vessels can safely operate.

Vegetation and floating debris can also become an issue on some waterways.

On tidal rivers such as the River Tyne, where Sentry Boats continues to support major infrastructure projects including the restoration of the Tyne Bridge, tide, current and commercial vessel movements remain important factors regardless of how pleasant the weather may appear.

Every location is different, which is why understanding the river is such an important part of planning any operation.

Supporting People Working Above the Water
Many of the projects we support involve people working from bridges, scaffolding, access platforms or other structures above a live river environment.

During summer these projects can take advantage of longer working days, but the fundamental requirement remains the same: should somebody enter the water, a properly equipped and experienced crew needs to be capable of responding quickly.

The safety boat crew therefore maintains a continuous watch over both the workforce and the surrounding waterway. At the same time, crews may be monitoring vessel movements, maintaining communication with shore-based teams and identifying any developing hazards that could affect the operation.

It requires concentration, experience and good communication between everyone involved.
